You can only create partitions up to 2TB on MBR disks, if you need to create partitions larger than 2TB or the total size of partitions on disks larger than 4TB, use GPT instead of MBR.

Jan 19, 2015 · Booted into Linux on another drive in that box, and gparted said that the drive was GPT-formatted but was missing the MBR. The drive I tried to install onto was out of a FreeNAS 9.3 RaidZ1 3-disk set, so it was GPT formatted. Change MBR to GPT on external hard drive with data: I found a way for the internal one here. However the External drive is a Data drive only, I dont't need to care about any bootloaders etc. So is there an easy way to do it? It is a 3TB external drive, the setup in Gpartet looks like that:
