Marans or French Marans , originated from , you guessed it, France. They come in many varieties, 9 of which meet the French Standard (in case you wanted to show in France ) Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, Black, Birchen, Black Copper, Wheaten, Black-tailed Buff, White and Columbian.
It is a gorgeous breed laying one of the darkest brown eggs known. They are quite common in France where they originated from. The French standard calls for lightly feathered legs. There are only a hand-full of breeders here in the U.S. that have been able to produce Marans stock that comes close to the French standard.
